How Safe Are Your Stables?

Any stables, whether they house recreational horses, ponies or highly trained race-horses are a lucrative target for thieves with plenty of valuable assets to steal. If there is a significant a lack of security, then they become an easy target as well.

Stables don’t just house expensive mounts, tack, and equestrian equipment, but might also attract vandals who enjoy destroying property and hurting and killing innocent animals.

For a horse owner, there is nothing more distressing than to hear that their horse was stolen or hurt, and sadly, criminals will go to any lengths to get what they want.

So, it's important to think about protecting your investment. The British Racing industry is worth around £4 billion and employs over 6,000 people to provide first-class care and attention for the 14,000 horses currently in training, and with a price of between £10,000 - £20,000 for a yearling with the potential to earn huge sums in winnings, these high train creatures are a very valuable asset. Therefore a well-protected stable yard with CCTV coverage and intruder alarms is essential.

Protect your Tack

The cost of a good dressage saddle runs between £3,000 and £4,000 plus all the additional tack such as bridle, reins, stirrups, etc, adding another £500 or more to the bill. Even a mid-range working saddle will cost £200 - £300. The 'Tack Room' is a magnet for thieves as there is a ready market for 'second-hand' tack. Good strong locks along with an intruder alarm and possibly, a CCTV camera with infrared capacity will certainly deter even the most determined thieves.
